Fort Collins: The Napa Valley of Colorado Craft Beer
By The Taproom Team
Fort Collins earned the Napa Valley comparison honestly. Per capita, this compact university city at the base of the Rockies is home to more craft brewery production than almost anywhere else in America — and unlike many places with impressive brewing statistics, the quality matches the quantity.
The combination of Odell Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing, and a constellation of smaller producers has turned the Poudre River Corridor and Old Town Fort Collins into one of North America's premier beer tourism destinations. A long weekend barely scratches the surface.
**New Belgium Brewing Company**
Start here, because every Colorado craft beer story starts with Fat Tire. Jeff Lebesch's amber ale — inspired by a Belgian cycling trip in 1991 — became the beer that proved Americans would embrace artisan craft brewing at scale. The brewery's riverside campus is extraordinary: tours are some of the best in the country, the tasting room serves the full lineup including the exceptional Voodoo Ranger series, and the Funkwerks-influenced sour program (now housed at the main brewery) produces some of the most compelling wild ales in Colorado.
**Odell Brewing Company**
If New Belgium is the icon, Odell is the connoisseur's choice — and the distinction matters less as both breweries continue to produce exceptional beer. The employee-owned Odell has maintained a commitment to quality over growth that's rare among regional breweries, and the flagship 90 Shilling Scottish Ale remains one of the most perfectly balanced session ales brewed in Colorado. Rupture Fist Imperial Red and the rotating Isolation Ale winter seasonal are as good as anything the state produces.
**Horse & Dragon Brewing Company**
Old Town Fort Collins's neighborhood taproom, where the community feels as important as the beer. The IPAs are technically excellent, the patio is crowded with locals on warm evenings, and the rotating seasonal program gives regulars a reason to visit every month. This is what craft beer culture looks like when it's genuinely rooted in place.
**Equinox Brewing**
A smaller operation that proves Fort Collins's depth. Equinox's Belgian-influenced program — saisons, tripels, and the occasional Lambic-style spontaneous ale — gives the city's beer scene a creative edge that complements the bigger names beautifully.
Plan two days at minimum. Walk between Old Town taprooms in the afternoon, use rideshare to reach New Belgium and Odell in the evening. The Denver to Fort Collins drive is 65 miles — the right length for a craft beer weekend that justifies the journey.
